The Curve Test

To encourage more authentic storytelling and further the conversation, the AHEAD OF THE CURVE film team created the Curve Test, inspired by the Bechdel test,  to deepen on-screen and behind-the camera representation for the Curve community.

Specifically designed to look at LGBTQ+ women and non-binary characters in film and television, the Curve Tests asks if media featuring lesbians, queer women, trans people, and/or non-binary people:

  1. Focuses on more than coming out
  2. Doesn’t reduce characters to stereotypes

Films and series that pass the test help broaden and deepen representation and promote visibility beyond stereotypes. A gold star is awarded if the people in front of and behind the camera are LGBTQ+.

The Curve Test is not intended to be used as a weapon to shame. Films and series that don’t pass are not to be condemned. Rather, the test is intended as a tool for conversation, a barometer to help us see where we are pushing the movement forward and where we need to put more attention.

As GLAAD states, “Our society continues to stand on the precipice of progress as industries work to build a new normal, as we reassess our social and political systems in this country, as our culture addresses overdue calls for social justice and racial reckoning, and as anti-LGBTQ bills are introduced at record rates. Being able to see yourself and authentic storytelling are more important than ever and can be tools to create change.”
